Canada Post is looking at ways to modernize operations to battle the decreasing use of regular mail. Some of these will impact seniors and adults with disabilities such as eliminating home delivery and increasing postage rates significantly.
Over the next five years, Canadian households that receive their mail at their door will be converted to community mailbox delivery. These are large communal mailboxes located close to a neighbourhood and can be accessed with a key. The transition is expected to take 5 years to complete on a national scale.
A new pricing structure will take effect March 31, 2014. Under these changes, the cost of a stamp will also jump from $0.63 to $0.85 for bulk purchase of stamps, or $1 for individual stamps.
If you feel these changes may impact you negatively, you can call your local MP’s office or visit http://petition.ndp.ca/stop-the-cuts-to-our-postal-service to sign an online petition.
